Digitizing Music History: John Peel's 65,000 Vinyl Records to Be Put Online

“When it comes to the history of modern popular music, the importance of the late radio DJ John Peel can hardly be overstated. During his nearly 40-year tenure at the BBC, Peel welcomed hundreds of artists in the studio to record Peel Sessions, from legendary classic rock acts and Grammy winners to under-the-radar indie bands in the late 90s. When he died in 2004, Peel had himself reached legendary status.

As you can imagine, he amassed quite a record collection over the years. In total, Peel owned over 25,000 vinyl LPs and 40,000 vinyl singles. Before long, we’ll all be able to browse his collection on the Web, according to the BBC.”… READ MORE

In the 80s in Germany you were either “punker” or “popper”. You listened to punk or pop/new wave. This is a song by the German punk band Artless called “Mein Bruder is ‘en Popper” and it’s about a punk guy who complains about his chic brother.

It’s a classic and it’s very funny.

Anyone who is interested in music and likes to explore music from other countries, listen to Fehlfarben - Monarchie und Alltag. This album is probably the best german record ever. Recorded and released in 1980 this album reflects the atmosphere of the Cold War and the thoughts of young punks in Germany in a way no other record ever did. The lyrics are like poetry. It’s about daily feelings, insecurity, love and life written and sung in such a special way, that it develops into an indestructible piece of music history and art in combination with the sound and the music - a dark and sometimes poppy mixture of punk, post-punk and new wave and some absolutely indefinable flavour.
“Die Coca-Cola Sonne scheint aufs Neueauf den Glanz unserer Republikes gibt bei uns Leutedie finden das schickWir tanzten bis zum Endezum Herzschlag der besten Musikjeden Abend jeden Tagwir dachten schon das ist der Sieg”

M.I.A. - Bad Girls

Ok here it is! First when I heard the “new” song I was like: yeah this is cool, but not really different from the Vicki Leekx version. I liked it and it was ok, but not so special yet.

Now here the video for the song and I have to say: That’s what I want, that’ s what always made me love M.I.A., that’s what will cause the addiction to the song. The whole video is great, the desert, “3rd world warrior attitude”, the atmosphere of the video also. She is an artist that doesn’t stop developing her own style.  I think I got it now, this whole “Bad Girls” thing.

And NOW I can say: Really looking forward to the new album!
